The history of the EWC dates back to 1960 when it was launched as the FIM Endurance Cup. Since then, the series has continuously evolved and is now a global motorsport highlight. In the 1980s, the calendar included up to ten events; today, the series focuses on the four major classics that thrill motorsport fans worldwide.

Since 2016, the season has been scheduled so that it does not overlap with other major motorcycle series such as MotoGP or WorldSBK. Therefore, the races take place from autumn to summer of the following year.
